Water Management District
Also known as: WMD, SJRWMD, SWFWMD, SFWMD
Florida's five Water Management Districts — SJRWMD (St. Johns River), SWFWMD (Southwest Florida), SFWMD (South Florida), SRWMD (Suwannee River), and NWFWMD (Northwest Florida) — are the regional bodies that issue Environmental Resource Permits for shoreline alteration, dock construction, and wetland-vegetation removal in regulated waters. Most retention ponds in Florida HOAs are also permitted through the local WMD, which carries an enforceable maintenance obligation on the HOA as the named permittee.
