Benthic barrier

A benthic barrier is a physical mat — black plastic, geotextile, or commercial benthic-barrier fabric — installed on the lake or pond bottom to block sunlight and prevent rooted aquatic plants from growing. Effective regardless of species; commonly used for swim areas, dock zones, and beach fronts. Suppresses native plants along with invasives. Sediment accumulates on top within 1–2 years and often requires periodic cleaning. Practical for small areas only — not a lake-scale solution.
