A Simple Seasonal Maintenance Checklist

Most major vehicle problems don't happen out of nowhere — they build up slowly and finally show up at the worst possible time, usually when the seasons change and put extra stress on aging parts. Here's a simple checklist worth running through a few times a year: Fluids: Check oil level and condition, coolant level, brake fluid, and washer fluid. Low or dirty fluid is one of the easiest things to catch early. Tires: Check tread depth and tire pressure, including the spare. Tire pressure especially swings with temperature changes. Battery: Look for corrosion on the terminals and have the battery load-tested if it's more than 3 years old — batteries fail fastest in extreme heat or cold. Brakes: Listen for squealing or grinding, and note if the pedal feels different than usual. Belts and hoses: Look for cracking, fraying, or soft spots — a small crack now is a roadside breakdown later. Lights: Confirm headlights, brake lights, and turn signals are all working — cheap to fix, expensive to get pulled over for. None of this takes long, and catching a problem during a routine check is almost always cheaper and less stressful than dealing with it after it strands you.
